What is Thicker Than Blood?

Thicker Than Blood is a story that was conceived in 2021 by artist and creative Olive Humphrey. In 2026, Olive published the story in the form of an illustrated novel, which is free to read at this website, thicker-than-blood.com. The long-term goal is for this novel to be adapted into a 3D animated limited TV series, created and funded independently or with the help of an indie studio.

Thicker Than Blood is a political fantasy story with themes of power, belonging, and loyalty. It follows a mercenary named Keia, who starts to question whether the organization they work for is worth their loyalty, after they become inconveniently close with their next target.

When do chapters release?

At the time of my (Olive) writing this, chapter releases do not operate on a set schedule. Thicker Than Blood is still being written, so if something happens in my life that slows down my progress, I don't want to disappoint readers who may be waiting for regular updates. However, in-progress chapters are being written several chapters down the line from what has already been published, so although I can't promise a new chapter every Friday, I can offer a general, semi-regular ballpark of 2-4 chapter releases per month.

What is your stance on AI?

Although some forms of artificial intelligence are very useful and beneficial, the AI-generated content that has become popular in the last few years—that is to say, AI-generated images, written media, music, and other forms of artistic expression, have not, and will not be, used in the development of Thicker Than Blood. AI-generated media lacks the humanity and the artistry that drives Thicker Than Blood in the first place. I draw and I write not to create a pretty end product, but because the act of drawing or writing fulfills a part of me that simply nothing else can do. I create because I love the act of creating, and so to use AI on this project would be to throw away everything that has ever made this story worth sharing. Not to mention all the horrible side effects and ethical issues that AI comes with.

I would like to be completely transparent: around 2022/2023, when AI-generated images and LLMs were gradually gaining traction, I briefly experimented with Wombo Dream and Character.AI and posted it online. I didn't know what I do now about AI (I don't think any of us did, really) and tried them out because they were trending in my circles and I was a curious and oblivious teenager. Absolutely nothing resulted from the content generated by these platforms, and I never took credit for any work that wasn't mine nor tried to hide the fact that this handful of images and message threads were AI. Everything was mainly out of brief curiosity/entertainment, but I wanted to write this here in the event that someone with nothing better to do tries to bring it up. Thicker Than Blood is my biggest passion project, and I would never willingly compromise it by integrating AI into the work.

If you come across an image, piece of writing/music, or other creative media from an external source that is referenced on this website that you know or suspect to be AI, please let me know using the same form as the bug report form.
